Clara Cozzolino
Clara Cozzolino weaves together the worlds of movement and sound, currently based in the Netherlands. With a background in contemporary dance and electronic music, Clara performs across a diverse range of mediums, from contemporary dance and film to opera, while also composing music for dance and theater.
Her work is enriched by an ongoing research journey that delves into the symbiotic relationship between sound and movement. As a student at the Institute of Sonology at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague, Clara explores the depths of sonic textures, while teaching contemporary improvisation movement classes, encouraging a refined sense of listening, both to body and sound.
Throught her class, Clara thoroughly explores different qualities of movement, unconventional coordination, and the underlying sensations that accompany each action.
Following a precise structure, navigating through different percentages, she focuses on how movement flows through the body, almost freeing itself from the forms it creates, guided by images and tasks.
Her creative process begins with an act of deep listening—a fluid experience where movement arises from the body’s dialogue with itself.
She perceives creation as distinct from composition.
Creation flows intuitively, from an acute awareness of sensation, whereas composition is a methodical structuring, a precise architecture of elements—whether sound or movement—organized in space and time.
In both mediums, the body of a dancer traces a trajectory on stage much like sound echoes through a sonic landscape.
After graduating from the DAF Dance Arts Faculty in Rome, Clara had the pleasure to dance pieces by Ohad Naharin, Christof Loy, Maurice Causey, among others.
As co-creator of the multidisciplinary duo Freckle Red Lipstick alongside Lela Di Costanzo, and music curator for Memic Project, she is attentive in bridging disciplines.
Over the past two years, she has deepened her exploration of electro-acoustic and electronic music composition, scoring dance performances for venues such as ICK Amsterdam, Korzo Theater, Café Theater Festival, and Amsterdam Fringe Festival, accompanying the works of artists including Sara Europaeus, Robin Nimanong, Ischa Statie, Astrid Klein Haneveld, Roberta Maimone, and Linde Wagemakers.
